Probation officers are in charge of supervising offenders who have been sentenced to probation instead of prison. They spend the majority of their time investigating and evaluating a client’s background and progression, so that they can give judges essential information.
Probation officers check on the offenders’ progress and make sure that they are staying out of trouble. They will visit offenders at home, at work or during therapy sessions to supervise their behavior. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, probation officers made a median annual wage of $45,910 in 2008.
